Thanks for everyone who weighed in on the idea to have neighborhood Trick-or-Treating being the Saturday prior to Halloween rather than Tuesday Oct 31st.

We will drop the proposal at this time and keep Trick-or-Treating only on Tuesday. While people are still submitting their votes/comments, it is clear that there is not the universal support we would need to make Saturday work. Without almost total agreement on the Saturday date, having an additional group go out Tuesday would create more logistical problems than moving things to Saturday would hope to solve. The most frequent comment/concern from people who indicated they wanted to keep the event on Tuesday was that they were worried even with advertising the change to Saturday, people would still come Tuesday, possibly from other neighborhoods, which is understandable and not an issue we can solve.

Thanks again everyone for your comments.  We’ll continue to think about other fun activities and events the neighborhood could do and always, if you are interested in joining the activities committee to help brainstorm or execute these events, please let us know!

Much debate was had on NextDoor and Facebook, and while most people who cast their vote via the website didn’t comment, we promised to post the anonymous comments that did come in via the website so people could see what their neighbors were thinking.   Those comments are below:

Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Best idea ever, I cannot believe this is such a big deal.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Hard to get home from work and manage trick or treating im the evening on a weeknight.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: [Heck] yes
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Hi all, this would be great
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: We both work so it’s so hard to try to trick or treat on a week night. It’s so rushed. Plus, the kiddos have to go to bed somewhat early since it’s a ‘school night.’ This would be much more enjoyable for all if we could celebrate on the weekend!! ;). That’s our 2 cents! Thanks!
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Holidays should be celebrated on the actual day.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Love the idea of having it Saturday! I grew up in the Milwaukee area and they always have it on the weekend closest to the 31st. So much better for families! Teachers appreciate it too because the kids aren’t so tired the next day.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I don’t like the idea of voluntarily setting our trick or treating up on a different day than the rest of McFarland. I understand that we are technically in Madison, but our kids go to McFarland and will be talking to their friends about it and will be confused about why ours is different. And I am very opposed to having two separate Trick or Treat events. The possibility of having to choose which day works best for us only to risk finding every second house on the street dark is frustrating to me.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I think people can do one or the other or both:)
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I don’t understand how this is even an option? It should be “If you would like to participate in trick or treating on Saturday, please sign up.” We’ll get a map and sign people up. Just keep it simple. Halloween will happen on the Tuesday, whether the poll likes it or not.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I feel as though tradition weighs heavily on my decision. I like the idea of a get together on the Saturday, but would prefer to keep trick or treating to the 31st. Thanks for polling everyone equally.
Vote: Not Sure Comment / Thoughts: I guess it’s not worth a fight over this, I’m happy with both. However, I think the opposition is valid when they say things are kind of cliquey. A poll of 60 people you personally know will obviously land a different result then if you polled a random sampling. If someone is willing to put on a neighborhood party, I think people would be more willing. On a positive note, I’d be glad to not have cranky kids the next day, and my in laws like to hand out candy while we roam the neighborhood and it certainly makes it easier on them as well.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I just like to think that we could keep it focused on one day for the kids (including the McFarland and Madison kids) and we can always have a party on a Saturday if the neighborhood wants to get together, which I’m totally for.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I like the trick-or-treating on the weekend. I would agree that there’s more time to enjoy it. Always seemed really hectic on the weekdays. However, I know kids from other neighborhoods come to our neighborhood, so somehow we should notify the rest of McFarland if we switch, more out of courtesy. Thanks!
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I see this as mostly a convenience for the adults. Kids don’t care what night Halloween is on, they still love it and are focused on getting candy, not staying up late or being at Halloween parties. I would love if the neighborhood held a Halloween party on that Saturday but this absolutely (optional or not) would set a precedent of our children having two Halloweens. While technically we are part of Madison, our children go to school in McF and those kids are trick-or-treating on actual Halloween and I don’t think kids or adults need two full nights or trick-or-treating. There are plenty of other events surrounding the holiday to fully enjoy it. Would we do this every year it falls on a Sunday-Thursday and then just have the one on Friday and Saturday? This makes it much LESS convenient in my opinion – having two Halloweens. There is also the confusion issue. Again, I fully realize this is optional but already lots of people have posted they would turn lights off on Tuesday if they plan to do it Saturday and we already know lots of kids come over from other parts of McFarland and I think that would be very sad if the neighborhood isn’t fully participating on Halloween (and I realize Tuesday prevents some people from participating anyway, but not as many as this would…) When Halloween does happen to fall on a Friday or Saturday it was always extra special but I think kids don’t really see it as that different, this is far more for the adults and I don’t think that’s what the point of trick-or-treating is. Lastly, I very much appreciate all the time and effort the Neighborhood Association puts into making our neighborhood great but this is a large decision that certainly warrants more input from the entire neighborhood. Thank you for providing this outlet.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I think it is too confusing to change it for our neighborhood only. And if it were to change to Saturday I feel the entire neighborhood would need to be on board. It doesn’t make sense to have 2 Halloweens, again it’s too confusing. I think it would be better to have a neighborhood party in the park on Saturday and keep trick or treating on Tuesday.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I think it will cause confusion for some kids if parents don’t want to participate in both, but also confusion if it is only on Sat and they are normally used to it being on actual Halloween. My daughter is young, but we prefer to only do it on the actual Halloween date.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Makes sense to have it on Saturday- John Nagler has many good points as to why it should occur on Saturday. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I’d like to enjoy it, and not have to watch the click for bedtime (because it’s a school night.)
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I think Saturday is a great idea for the kids!! Thanks
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I will only be manning to door once. On Halloween. Sorry.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: we should do both. just. hangs it to a party with trick or treating at the park so all the people complaining stop
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: I’m not opposed to it being on a weekend date, it then I wouldn’t want two trick or treat dates to have to buy candy for as that would get expensive! I prefer keeping it as the regular 10/31 date as it makes the holiday feel more “real” to me, personally. I think if people want the weekend option to stay up later, then they should just have a Halloween party…
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Keep it consistent with what McFarland is doing.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Love the idea and we will fully participate.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: If some neighbors want to celebrate on Saturday, why instead of try to change Halloween, why they don’t organize a Secret Places Halloween Party, with a custom contest for the kids and little prizes for the winners and participants! They can give them candies if they want… in this case it is not mandatory to attend or to change the trick or treat, but to celebrate and if the kids of those 60 families don’t want to do Halloween on the 31st, it wont be a big deal, but the other 240 houses around can celebrate as they want on the 31st!!
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Hi! I do not have children of my own but do enjoy seinge kids dressed up & giving candy out. If you were going to do it on Sunday I would be good with that – but most likely there will be other activities going on Saturday night (i.e. Halloween parties) so on Saturday I probably won’t be home. Don’t give my vote too much weight though – I don’t have kids and maybe it is tons easier for parents to have it on Saturday. I have to say I find it interesting that some people seem to be up in arms about switching it. My sister lives in [elsewhere], WI and they have been doing on the Sunday before for decades so it certainly isn’t some bizarre concept.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Much easier than trick our treating after a long day of work.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: My husband and I have lived in Secret Places for 12 years, and we have always enjoyed celebrating Halloween on whichever day it may fall. I think you are potentially going to ruin the actual Halloween night for the hundreds of kids in our neighborhood who want to trick or treat on Halloween, as well as the hundreds that come here from other neighborhoods. Trying to move trick-or-treating to a weekend has nothing to do with the kids and more to do with convenience for the parents. We have four kids and week night trick or treating is by no means “easy” or convenient, but that’s the tradition. I don’t see the need for a vote on this. Halloween in on Oct. 31st. Period. People have the right to have their own Halloween parties or organized activities, but if you start messing with when “we,” as a neighborhood, celebrate Halloween, you are creating confusion and animosity among neighbors. If the neighborhood activities committee wants to organize a Halloween party, that’s one thing, but changing our trick-or-treating date is overstepping boundaries.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: No brainer! Kids, parents, families….. majority of people have Sunday off and I believe the neighborhood would be alive and fun for Halloween, given that fact. More people would be involved and enjoying the Halloween spirit knowing there’s no waking up for work/school the next morning. The [we] are all in for Saturday Halloween.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: On 10/31 like the rest of our community
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Thank you for addressing the concerns. I do feel that this would have been the appropriate path to take initially. Please keep this in mind when making decisions for the community going forward.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: This Neighborhood has always celebrated on Halloween. It is natural, organic and enjoyable for everyone that wants to participate.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: This question could have been written in a more bipartisan way. The favoritism of the people writing the question is obvious, but we appreciate the poll.
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: To clarify, what I really prefer is just one trick or treat day. I’d prefer that to be on the actually day of Halloween, however I can get on board with a Saturday if that’s the ONLY trick or treat day. Having two options just seems unnecessary and confusing and would be much more fun if it’s one unified day for everyone.
Vote: I like the idea of Saturday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: Way more fun and relaxing!! Great idea!
Vote: Keep it Tuesday Trick-Or-Treating Comment / Thoughts: We are flexible to accommodate the majority vote but really don’t like the idea of TWO events and most likely would not participate in both. We’d pick one to participate in.
